About

Hi! My name is Jordy Oplaat,  industrial designer with an entrepreneurial mindset. I get excited to create impactful products for complex challenges in which multiple stakeholders, societal developments and emerging technologies come together successfully. I believe products, tools and services should act as enablers, helping people to get the best out of life while creating value for all parties. In this way, true impact can be realised.

I do this by utilising my knowledge of (product) design, innovation and searching for collaboration with other disciplines.  This defines my approach: hands-on, iterative and experimental. In my opinion key for the fast-changing world.

I am pragmatic, and through my professional career, I developed an analytical attitude. Being pragmatic and critical helps me to break down challenges and stay focused on a defined goal, while the iterative design process allows me to pivot quickly if necessary.

For me, challenges and keep learning is important to me, to grow both profesionally and personally. Being curious, motivated and proactief helps me with this, ofcourse with a positive attitude.

Focus areas

What i love about design is its variety of types of projects to work on. Throughout my studies I have explored different topics but my favorite type of projects are technological products designed for impact. Thus this is the direction I want to focus on develop further.

I get inspiration from potential game-changers, like new design methods, new business approaches and identifying possible matches between socio-cultural trends and technological developments. Including these inspirations and matches supports the creative process, which is essential for successful innovations.

I enjoy to design products and create propositions with a strong value proposition. Key is empathizing with businesses and users but also by knowing what it takes to realise it. I do this by combining the best of my studies HBO IPO and Master ID.

A glance at my personal life

I am a sportive guy. I’ve played multiple sports, from soccer to dancing and  currently mountain biking. Actually, there are not much sports I don’t like. My friends call me a social, friendly and (a little bit) stubborn. Within my group of friends, often I am one of the persons to organize activities, such as our annual weekend of friends.

I love a good adventure so now and then. With my friends for example, we have made trips through Europe with a van and a year later by train. Some cities we visited were Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest, Zadar, Krakow and Vienna. The most spontaneous part is that we booked all accommodations during the trips.

My interest for design and innovation is not limited to working hours. I like to experiment with my 3D printer at home and make products out of old products. Furthermore, with two fellow designers/friends we are currently developing an innovative lamp. Unfortunately I can’t tell much more about it now, but hopefully we can show it in the future.
