Project description

Stint Urban Mobility was founded in 2011 by Edwin Renzen and Peter Noorlander. Together they started with developing an electric vehicle for the out-of-school care, the BSO Stint. New models, like the Pick-up Stint and Cargo Stint , makes the Stint chassis suitable for transportation of good and cargo. Stint Urban Mobility oftenly receives the request of childminders whether the company can design a model that fits their needs as the BSO Stint doesn’t. This resulted in my design challenge:

‘Design an application for the Pick-up Stint, to make it suitable for the transportation of six children or babies in the childminder care’

CHIV for the Pick-up stint

CHIV is an add-on for the Pick-up Stint, designed to safely go on the road with four to six children and/or 2 babies in the childminder care. The design takes into account regulations, business and all stakeholders. Due to the strict regulations for children and babies, the project has been executed to the level of proof-of-concept.

The process

The project started with a preliminary research which was divided into four subjects; the current Pick-up Stint, market, legal and users & stakeholders. Interviews, observations and questionnaires have been carried out to develop a thorough understanding of the target group. The output of the research resulted into a complex program of demands and deep understanding of the design space.

Throughout the research phase I also hands-on explored the Pick-up Stint by hand driving and testing lay-outs.

The ideation phase started activities to generate ideas (e.g. brain drawing). The ideas with the most potential, based on the program of demands and expert input, have been worked out into three unique concepts.

The three concepts have been evaluated with the primary stakeholders and experts. Based on their input and the program of demands a final concept was chosen. This concept has been further elaborated in the fields of ergonomics, construction, design and safety. The final concept was turned into a full size functional model.
